How often should UPS batteries be replaced?

A UPS is only as reliable as its batteries. Here is a practical guide to battery life, the warning signs and how to plan replacement before a failure.

Typical battery life

Most UPS systems use sealed lead-acid (VRLA) batteries. Their design life is often quoted as 5 years or more, but in real buildings they usually need replacing after about 3–5 years. Lithium-ion UPS batteries last longer, commonly 8–10 years, but still need monitoring.

Why heat matters in Saudi Arabia

Temperature is the biggest factor in battery life. As a widely used rule of thumb, every 8–10 °C above 25 °C can roughly halve the life of a VRLA battery. UPS rooms that run warm — common in Saudi summers — wear batteries out much faster.

Warning signs

Shorter backup time than before, battery or fault alarms on the UPS, swollen or leaking cases, and high or uneven readings during testing all mean the batteries need attention.

How to plan replacement

Regular impedance testing, a thermal survey and an annual load or discharge test show the real condition of every battery string. That lets you replace batteries on a planned date — not after an outage.

What we recommend

Keep UPS rooms cool, test batteries at least twice a year, keep records, and replace whole strings together. A UPS maintenance contract takes care of all of this for you.
